Tarsus SEV School psychologist Eray Varol gives the following recommendations to parents to make the most effective use of the semester break:

.SPEND A LOT OF TIME WITH THEM: During the holiday, students need to rest and have fun, spend more time with you and feel your love and compassion. So try to spend more time with them.

.MAKE THEM STUDY TOO (WITHOUT ASKING TOO MUCH): Asking your child to make a short revision of their classes on a regular basis would help them to retain knowledge, although trying to force them into a routine of intensive study during the semester break will have a negative impact on their academic motivation for the second semester.

.TEACH THEM ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT: Holiday time is a very good opportunity to teach children about time management. Try to show them that they can plan their activities during holiday too, and make the most effective use of that time. This will be positively reflected on their school performance as well.

.SCHEDULE READING TIMES: As a family you can schedule reading hours. You can select a book which your child likes, and have a conversation about the book. This approach will both meet his/her emotional needs and set you as a good role model for them.

.PLAY GAMES TOGETHER: Holiday, especially for young children, mean playing games. You can play together by drawing pictures, singing, doing drama, thus contributing to their development.

.PHYSICAL RELAXATION: Children may experience physical exhaustion as well as cognitive. It is therefore important for them to have a regular sleep pattern during the holiday. Encourage relaxation times and athletic activities, and also, be careful about their eating habits.

.HOLDING FAMILY MEETINGS: You can organize a family meeting on a weekly basis to review the last semester and to plan for the next semester.  You can also talk about the incidents that take place during the holiday and share your emotions about them.

.DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF: If a parent does not believe that they are a good parent, then their parenting would suffer. Do not blame yourself by thinking that you are not a good parent. Parenting is the most difficult profession of the world. Be sincere, positive and hope inspiring.
