SOME LESSER KNOWN TRUTHS ABOUT SPACE
Starting with their Turkish textbook, "Moon: The Mirror of the Sun", Grade 2 students made some further research about some rarely known truths about earth and space. The most striking findings of the students from their research, which consisted of reviewing many books, finding and drawing visuals, preparing displays and watching presentations, are summarized below:
* Let's say that you hopped onto your space shuttle and went as far as Jupiter, and were able to pass through to the atmosphere; unfortunately you will not find a surface hard enough for you to land! Jupiter is a giant mass of gas made up of hydrogen and helium to a great extent.
* If you think that an Earth day of 24 hours is not enough for you, you'll have a hard time in Jupiter. Here, a day is about 10 hours, since Jupiter is the planet which completes the rotation around itself in shortest time.
* The surface of the earth is smoother than a bowling ball.
* It is impossible to cry in space. Because in an environment without gravity, your tears are suspended in the air instead of rolling down your cheeks.
* Astronauts who travelled to space have reported that the space smells like burnt meat, hot metal, and welding smoke.
* The moon is in fact not a source of light; it just reflects the rays of the sun to us.
